John J. Murphy has now updated his landmark bestseller Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets, to include all of the financial markets.

"If one could read only one book on technical analysis, this should be the one." --Knight-Ridder Financial Products and News (on the first edition, Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets, 0-13-898008-X)

This outstanding reference has already taught thousands of traders the concepts of technical analysis and their application in the futures and stock markets. Covering the latest developments in computer technology, technical tools, and indicators, the second edition features new material on candlestick charting, intermarket relationships, stocks and stock rotation, plus state-of-the-art examples and figures. From how to read charts to understanding indicators and the crucial role technical analysis plays in investing, readers gain a thorough and accessible overview of the field of technical analysis, with a special emphasis on futures markets. Revised and expanded for the demands of today's financial world, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in tracking and analyzing market behavior.

"One way to get started in technical analysis is to read a good book on the subject. One of my favorites is Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets: A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Methods and Applications by John J. Murphy. It's an easy read." Ralph J. Acampora, CMT, Managing Director, Prudential Securities Inc.

Great book written in plain english2010-09-014 / 5
Since I can remember, I have looked at charts in investment newsletters and other places and thought "how does he see that?" or "why does he say that?". This is a great book for me because it's written in plain english and is easy to follow. He doesnt make you bleary with deatails - giving just enough to convery the info without wearing you out. Great reference - it sits on my desk.

I've read a lot of books on trading and I've never come across one better than this. It's a piece of art.
    Great turning point book2010-08-115 / 5
With two years of study in the markets I've started to have some decent results but now that I've read & outlined the first 263 pages of this 800 page book I'm able to get 75% to 287% returns in 2-4 days. Some shorts, some longs, all by buying the option on the right day and getting out 2-3 days later. Yes, this book is originally written in 1950 or so but is the gold standard in the industry. This is one of four books [...] suggests to pass the test to be MTA certified. This is not an easy book to read as it is like a college textbook. Sit down in a chair at a table with a pencil and laptop and take many notes. But after only 263 pages I'm showing nice results & want to read the rest.

Caution - This book alone is not the answer. You need to know your platform, common sense rules of trading, and ALWAYS, limit your risk or you'll be one of the fallen. If you limit your risk you're halfway there. Good luck.
    Excellent Primer2010-05-235 / 5
This book is an excellent primer to technical analysis. Easy to read and complete enough for the average layman, the book's emphasis is on general knowledge, rather than arcane speciality. Those who desire simple ideas on how to make good market decisions should look forward to reading, studying, and applying the principles contained and explained in this textbook. Those, however, who want to master the markets through tachnical analysis, will quickly realize that this book is but the beginning of study, and it must be supplemented with more indepth, though difficult, additional readings.

For what it is, as a primer, Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets is an excellent start to the study.
    Cheaply bound2010-05-144 / 5
I bought this book some time ago and have used it often. However, it is cheaply bound and will not stand up to frequent use. In this sense it is not suitable for reference. I should think it would be commonly understood that an eighty five dollar book easily justifies a more durable binding. I would say the book is defective in this respect.
